Here's Why Men Should Be Using Beard Oil, Even On Stubble

It’s a question every man has wondered, “Do I need to use beard oil if I just have stubble?”. A common misconception is that you only need to apply oil if you have more than a bit of stubble, or if you are trying to grow a beard. Here’s why oil should be a regular part of your grooming routine.

A Healthy Beard

Let’s first begin with what matters most, keeping your facial hair healthy and looking it’s best. Think of oil like hair conditioner. If you shampoo the hair on your head without conditioning it, it doesn’t look or feel as good as it does after it’s been conditioned. Not to worry, as oil will only add a mild shine, and it will absorb into your skin and beard quickly.

On that note, as your stubble grows you should cleanse your face daily and condition your beard at least once a week. For fast, easy, and effective grooming we suggest the all-in-one Uncle Jimmy’s Hair Beard and Body Wash followed up by Uncle Jimmy’s Hair & Beard Leave-In Conditioner.

Kissable Facial Hair

If you don’t do it for you, do it for your other half! Without oil your beard or stubble will get dry and wiry. Stubble may never be defined as “soft” but without applying oil it will get increasingly scratchy, making kissing you uncomfortable. If your beard is already dry and wiry, oil will rapidly improve its feel and texture.

A little bit of Beard Oil goes a long way, so all you need is 1 or 2 drops for stubble, increasing gradually as your beard grows. Massage it in to ensure it evenly distributes. Use directly after you shower 3 to 4 times a week for healthy beards, 4 to 6 times a week for dry beards. Your facial hair can be damp, but if it’s too wet the oil won’t absorb, so be sure to pat dry first. Yes, you can apply oil when your beard is dry, but it’s always best when applied to a damp beard.

Manageable Facial Hair

Oil will make your facial hair more manageable and help keep it in place. It won’t provide a hard or stiff hold, but it will help you to guide and set your facial hair. As your stubble grows into a longer and fuller beard, you will need to transition to a beard balm to keep your hair in place. If you have curly facial hair or unruly facial hair you may need to transition to a beard balm while your facial hair is still fairly short. Beard balm is also perfect for extremely dry skin, which we discuss below.

Keep Your Face Moisturized

Don’t let the name fool you, beard oil is for the skin under your stubble too. If you are someone who suffers from flakey ‘beardruff’ it is because your skin is dry. Beardruff isn’t only uncomfortable and unsightly, but it can make shaving painful. A smooth shave will be almost impossible, and your dry skin will increase your risk for razor burns, bumps, and ingrown hair.

If your face is extremely dry, especially during the winter months, you may want to transition to daily oil. If your skin remains dry, consider transitioning to a Beard Balm to deep condition and moisturize. If you only have a goatee or stubble a facial moisturizer may be the better option. Apply your facial moisturizer first, give it 3 to 5 minutes to absorb into your skin, then apply your oil on top.

Minimize Itch

If you are generally clean-shaven and are trying to grow a beard or stubble, you may experience itchiness as coarse new growth pushes through your skin. This reason alone is why many men abandon their scruff or give up on growing their dream beard. Before you give up, try a beard oil. Oil will condition your skin and beard soothing irritation, and minimize the itch. Itchy skin can also be caused by dry skin, so using oil will help. Apply daily until the itch subsides then transition to 3 to 6 days a week depending on your needs. The goal is to be proactive so that the itch does not return.

Moisturize After You Shave

Moisturize After You Shave

Whether you are going for a clean shave or just cleaning up your neck and edges, you need to condition your skin after you shave. Shaving exfoliates, removing your first layer of skin along with your hair. Oil will create a protective layer for the new skin that has been exposed. If you prefer a traditional aftershave, feel free to apply that first, especially if you have nicks or cuts. Then follow up with oil a few minutes later to hydrate and soothe.

Help Your Facial Hair Grow

If you are having trouble growing your beard or your facial hair is patchy, switch to a Beard Growth Oil with Biotin. This will deliver the benefits above as well as nourish your roots and hair follicles, creating a more conducive environment for your beard to grow.

Be patient with your patchy beard. Clean up the edges, but avoid the temptation to trim, and just let it grow. Even though it is growing unevenly, it will eventually grow long enough that you can cover the patches with the longer areas. Once your patchy areas have grown to your desired length you can trim your entire beard. It might be worth a trip to the barber for your initial trim.
